La Mer La mer de Trenet était… l’étang de Thau En 1943, dans le train entre Montpellier et Perpignan, Charles Trenet écrit en une vingtaine de minutes la chanson, La Mer. Presque comme pour passer le temps. Il se serait inspiré non pas de la mer mais de l’étang de Thau. Lui même ne croyait pas à l’avenir de cette chanson qui fit le tour du monde. La chanson a été enregistrée pour la première fois par le chanteur français Roland Gerbeau en 1945. Lorsque la version de Trenet est sortie en 1946, elle est devenue un succès et est restée un standard du jazz depuis. Trenet a dit qu'il avait écrit une version des paroles sous forme de poème à l'âge de 16 ans. L'air lui est venu alors qu'il voyageait en train en 1943 entre Montpellier et Perpignan alors qu'il regardait par la fenêtre l'étang de Thau , une lagune du sud de la France. Il l'a noté sur un morceau de papier. La chanson a été enregistrée en 1945 par Roland Gerbeau. Trenet lui-même a enregistré sa chanson pour la première fois en 1946. Au fil des ans, la chanson est devenue un standard du jazz avec un grand nombre d'artistes. Outre l'original en français, la chanson a également été enregistrée dans plusieurs autres langues avec la version anglaise "Beyond the Sea" est devenue la chanson signature du chanteur américain Bobby Darin. En 1966 il y avait déjà plus de 100 enregistrements de La Mer et c'était la chanson la plus vendue de France avec "La Vie en rose" d'Edith Piaf.		The Sea The Trenet Sea was... The Lagoon of Thau. Over the years the song became a jazz standard with a large number of artists. Besides the original in French, the song was also recorded in several other languages with the English version "Beyond the Sea" became the signature song for the American singer Bobby Darin. In 1966 there were already over 100 recordings of La Mer and it was France's best-selling song together with Edith Piaf's "La Vie en rose".
